Nigerian
Dwarf goats are great fun. They are hardy and easy to care for all year
round. The young are so cute and cuddly! Breeding is easy and seldom are
there any kidding problems. A small pasture area or a modest amount of hay
is all that is necessary to keep one or a few as pets. We feed ours a lamb
creep feed which has plenty of extra nutrition. Your local feed store
would sell a feed specific for goats which would be more than adequate.
Purina makes a high quality goat feed. An adult which is not pregnant
doesn’t even require feed but only sufficient clean hay or pasture. The
more time you spend with them the better pets they make. After kidding,
some people do milk the does as with the larger breeds. The milk is just
as good, you just have to bend over a little further to reach the
"Fountains"!
They
come in a wide array of colors: white, black, gray, spotted, and any
combination of the above. Each can be truly unique!
The "Great Pyranese" breed of dog is excellent as a guardian for pygmy
goats as well as many kinds of livestock. They are one of the Giant breeds
of dog weighing as much as 180 lbs. They will not permit
any
kind of predatory behavior within their perimeter territory. My male
"Christian" has been with the pygmy goats since he was 8 weeks old. NO
coyote will touch any of my DWARF goats!
